Montessori Absorbent Minds Early Learning

A childcare facility accommodating 141 students designed in accordance with National Quality Framework and the Education and Care Services Act 2013.

A commercial kitchen was designed to prepare the food for the children and a café for serving 40 people creating a Community Gathering Hub. The facility also caters for a professional development training centre.

The facility was design in the Montessori Method and from the very beginning we were guided by the Montessori principle that nature should be used to inspire children.

The outdoor play spaces are north facing and with connection to the landscape via a deep veranda awning that provides extensive undercover play.

Our team was passionate about creating an environment which is beautifully organised, inviting and homely and which helps both children and adults to feel a sense of community, safety and belonging.

We believe, to nurture is to focus on wellbeing and relationships as a means of supporting the growth and development of a child. Central to this approach is a
focus on inclusion, which is important to embed into all aspects of school life, the built environment and landscape.

We hope to empower children to understand that we all learn and develop in different ways. Therefore, we design spaces which support all students to grow and learn in a safe and nurturing environment, including children who have disabilities (physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional).

We intend to create a school that nurtures children’s development, supports nature and enhances wellbeing – the built environment is balanced with an array of outdoor areas to enhance a range of learning experiences and social connections.

St Paul’s School – Performing Arts & Physical Education Centre

The Performing Arts and Physical Education Centre was created in line with the Principal’s ethos of instilling creativity and sustainability in education and building design.

The new construction was required to connect seamlessly with the existing gymnasium on site which was also refurbished as part of this project.

The brief called for a multi-purpose facility, combining a gymnasium, sporting and performing arts space including drama studios.

For the purpose of sporting activities, the building can be opened to provide natural light and ventilation. To allow the space to be darkened for performances, an automated building management system was installed to sense and maintain an ambient temperature with minimal energy expenditure.

Stella Maris Administration & Prep Building

Stella Maris Administration & Prep Building

Towill Design was engaged by Stella Maris Catholic Primary School to undertake their masterplan.

The Administration and Prep building represents stage one, incorporating two prep classrooms, amenities, staff facilities, reception and staff offices.

To identify the prep classrooms as a separate entity we designed two perpendicular, gable-roofed structures extending from the northern side of the building’s main body to provide spaces of a more accommodating scale for prep students.

The building’s materiality was chosen to tie in with existing buildings and landscaping, including vegetable gardens and an amphitheatre to accommodate the sloping site. It was important to Stella Maris and Towill Design that the new building did not require air-conditioning. Correct orientation and large amounts of cross ventilation were therefore a crucial aspect of the building’s overall design.

The Early Learning facility was designed to embrace the schools chosen approach to early learning, Reggio Emilia.

In this philosophy, the physical environment actively participates as part of the educational process for the children, often being referred to as ‘the third teacher’.

The interiors have a direct relationship with the natural environment through large sliding doors onto the deck. This covered connection provides a flexible play space between outdoors and indoors – allowing children to learn from & interact with nature whilst under full teacher supervision.

The kindergarten has been designed with a variety of heightened spaces, forms, light, colours & textures including a collection of recycled & natural materials.

Bribie Island General Learning Building

Bribie Island General Learning Building

The new Music & General Learning Building at Bribe Island SHS plays a significant role within the context of the school campus due to its prominent location, two-story form and contemporary design in comparison to the dated building stock adjacent.

To reduce the scale and mass of the building across the site, the building separates into two pavilions joined by breezeways on both the ground and first floors. This space doubles as circulation and functional collaborative learning areas. The separation of the building mass to the North enabled the creation of a gathering space for the school community and external performance space for music and drama. The design of the building responds to the coastal location by taking advantage of natural ventilation and light, with consideration of prevailing winds and storm directions.

Harristown Senior Learning Building – Hospitality & Admin

Administration Centre presented an opportunity to formalise the school’s facade and create a new entrance to the school through the relocation of administration facilities from the centre of the site.

The project’s 3-storey form and corner site resulted in the new building becoming a prominent icon both within the campus and the broader context.

Our team were required to carefully examine the placement of the building and courtyard within the confines of an existing car park to avoid negatively impacting the surrounding heritage significant trees. The selected footprint of the new building addresses the site’s prominent street frontages and connects to existing buildings via covered links.

The placement of administration within the building and site ensures there is prominent street access and a well-defined beginning to the school’s internal accessibility.

Brisbane Central State School Masterplan

Towill Design were engaged by the Queensland Department of Education (DoE) in both 2015 and 2018 to complete master plans to address progressive in-catchment enrolments growth at Brisbane Central SS. These outcomes have assisted in a successful, progressive site expansion returning the school to it’s original size, yet modernizing and encouraging new and active connections across it’s complex topography.

The school occupies three lots with relatively steep level changes from the southern end to the northern end of the site.

The Brisbane Central State School site is identified as significant on the Queensland Heritage Register with the majority of in situ buildings of heritage significance. A Heritage Conservation Management Plan identified components of significant built and natural elements (such as trees and walls) which restricts development of the site.

Residence 2

The brief for this project was to push boundaries and create a residence that responds to the subtropical climate and connects with the outdoors throughout the year.

In response to the large irregular shaped site, we set the house at an east/west orientation, parallel with the site, to accommodate the narrow frontage and 60 metre length. To address the design challenges presented by an overland flood corridor, the habitable floor level was raised above the natural ground with the use of extensive decking. The timber decking also acted as an essential design element linking the indoor and outdoor spaces and the garden.

The entire house connects purposefully with the outdoors. From the thoughtful orientation of windows allowing for cross ventilation and maximum natural light to wide overhangs designed for windows and doors to open during rainfall.

The owners wanted to maximum natural light, feel connected with the outdoors and complement site by maximising the external space.

Located on a 405sqm vacant block in an inner city suburb of Brisbane, the main advantages of this block was the 35 metres exposure to the north with no neighbouring houses near the boundary; and the mature existing trees. The design allows the mature Jacaranda to continue to stretch her branches over the house by creating a 1.5 storey living area below. The representation of materials both internally and externally creates a connection between the internal and external spaces – Face brick, granite and recycled timber transition with ease from external to internal.

“Every room has a visual connection with outdoors each with a different perspective” – Glazing has been positioned to picture frame the sky or catch glimpses of birds within the branches of a tree.
